An Asus-branded Thunderbolt 5 expansion card has appeared on the firm's product pages. The new Asus ThunderboltEX 5 expansion card fits into a spare PCIe 4.0 x4 slot on your motherboard to provide a pair of the headlining Thunderbolt 5 ports and a trio of mini DisplayPorts to the rear of your chassis. Internally, the card also provides a Thunderbolt and USB 2.0 header, and you will need to attach it to your PSU (a single 6-pin) to enable up to 130W to connected devices. Regular Tom's Hardware readers may have noticed Gigabyte launched a similar product last week, amusingly dubbed the Thunderbolts 5. We don't know how the plural got in there, but there are minor differences between the Gigabyte and the Asus card. If you were looking for one of these expansion cards, comparing the specs is probably worth comparing – just in case any minor differences are important to you. Like the rival offering, the Asus ThunderboltEX 5 is based upon the Intel JHL9580 Thunderbolt 5 Controller. The expansion card bracket also has the same outputs: twin USB Type-C Thunderbolt 5 ports and three mini DisplayPorts. The DisplayPorts boost system display options by three 8K 60 Hz displays with DSC. Viewing the Asus product overview and specs pages, bandwidth and power specs diverge slightly. Asus says this card's dual USB Type-C Thunderbolt 5 ports support "up to 120 Gbps of bi-directional bandwidth" for super fast data transfers and video output. However, Gigabyte's specs say that its card delivers "up to 80 Gbps bi-directional bandwidth, or up to 120 Gbps single-direction bandwidth." The Asus card offers up to 130 watts of fast charging and 96W for one device. The firm says you'll need an Asus motherboard for that headlining figure. Meanwhile, Gigabyte says its card supports the PD 3.1 standard up to 100W. Interestingly, the Asus card only has one six-pin power connector, but the Gigabyte has two, so perhaps its USB-C ports can provide up to 100W power delivery. The number and type of internal connectors differ further between these Thunderbolt 5 add-in card offerings. Asus has one Thunderbolt and one USB 2.0 header. Gigabyte's card has two Thunderbolt headers (a 5-pin and a 3-pin) and an internal USB header. It isn't clear whether the internal Thunderbolt connectors need to be attached to the system motherboard Thunderbolt headers for this card to function fully. We don't have pricing or availability details yet for either product you might prefer. A cat caught up in an explosion has been found alive almost a week after it went missing. A 68-year-old man died in the suspected gas blast which damaged several houses in Morriston, Swansea on Monday. Three others were injured, including the missing animal's owner Claire Griffiths-Bennett and her son. While one of the family's cats was rescued from the rubble soon afterwards, ragdoll Teddy's whereabouts remained unknown. But on Sunday, the RSPCA's Llys Nini animal centre said: "Teddy has been caught!" The centre said Ms Griffiths-Bennett had been sitting next to the animal at the time of the blast. Llys Nini's Sally Hyman said they saw him "sitting on a pile of rubble". Ms Hyman said Teddy was looking at her and washing, but it was not until Sunday that they managed to catch him. She said: "He was big, fluffy and dirty but alive and well. Maybe he was hiding in the debris in the house." There were concerns the property would be demolished with Teddy inside. "So today [Sunday] was make or break," Ms Hyman added. In a Facebook post, the animal centre said: "Claire was released from hospital on Sunday and went straight to the remains of the house to see if Teddy would respond to her whistle. "However on arrival she was greeted with the news that Teddy had, just at that moment, been trapped. "There were tears all around." Elden Ring was the most critically acclaimed game released in 2022, garnering countless awards that spanned various categories, including some related to the technical aspect of the game. Even so, I'd be hard-pressed to consider Elden Ring some sort of a technical masterpiece. While its art is top-notch, the game doesn't include any cutting-edge technologies, and its default look is far from the most impressive game we've ever seen. On PC, there are texture mods and other user-made graphics enhancements and tweaks, but they can only go so far. Bandai Namco first announced that Elden Ring would be updated with ray tracing support months before launch. Then, there were no more official news on the matter (although dataminers had spotted the addition of related strings that hinted at an imminent release) until ray tracing was at last added to Elden Ring with this week's 1.09 patch. So, did FromSoftware manage to elevate the game's visuals to new heights? Yes and no. It's not a game-changing difference, which is hardly surprising since FromSoftware only elected to implement ray traced shadows and ambient occlusion. While it is understandable that the developers wouldn't want to go into adding ray traced global illumination since it would have required re-authoring the game's entire lighting, they could have at least added ray traced reflections, too. For that, we have the precedent of additions to an existing game and a live service one at that (Grand Theft Auto V on current-generation consoles). Going back to Elden Ring, the impact of ray tracing (set to max on PC) varies between scenes, which is why I've captured several, both indoors and outdoors, near the beginning of the game. Generally, the ray tracing implementation improves the accuracy of shadows, making objects like rocks or foliage look more grounded and realistic. It can be noticeable, though it is hardly a night-and-day difference. Aesthetically, it tends to make the visuals darker than the non-ray traced option. Speaking of performance, outdoor scenes are a lot more taxing. In this small cave, for example, max ray tracing costs 29 FPS (on the GeForce RTX 4090, the mightiest graphics card available, at 4K resolution), a 24% decrease compared to ray tracing set to off. RT ON RT OFF As soon as we step out of the cave, the performance cost is much larger. Max ray tracing runs at 53 FPS, while ray tracing off is up to 99 FPS. The FPS is nearly halved here, though the visual improvement with the foliage is quite visible. NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation is opening a preliminary investigation into about 2.4 million Tesla Inc. vehicles after four reports of collisions linked to its Full Self-Driving software. The investigation covers 2016-24 Model S and Model X vehicles, 2017-24 Model 3 sedans, 2020-24 Model Y crossovers and 2023-24 Cybertrucks, all equipped with Full Self-Driving technology. In each of the four reports, a Tesla vehicle crashed after entering an area with reduced roadway visibility, such as conditions caused by fog, while the driver-assist technology was engaged. In one crash, a Tesla fatally struck a pedestrian, and another incident resulted in an injury. Poco C51, which was launched earlier this year in April, is now available at a discounted price when purchased with an Airtel Prepaid connection. Poco has collaborated with Airtel to offer the discount price on Flipkart. The handset will come locked with Airtel Prepaid connection and include some Airtel benefits. The Poco C51 was launched in India at Rs. 8,499 for the 4GB+64GB RAM and storage configuration. It sports a 6.52-inch HD+ (720x1,600 pixels) display and is powered by a MediaTek Helio G36 SoC. Poco India in collaboration with Airtel will sell the Poco C51 with a Rs. 2,500 discount. The company said that the phone will be sold as India's most affordable 4G smartphone as part of this collaboration. It will be available on Flipkart at a price of Rs. 5,999 starting July 18. However, the phone will come locked to an Airtel Prepaid connection. To sweeten the deal, buyers will also get 50 GB of one-time mobile data from Airtel. Connectivity options on the smartphone include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Glonass, Beidou, a micro-USB port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.
